Forget the ghosts, Mica. It’s real, live people you should fear.
Tragedy has brought Micaela Burgos back to her hometown of Sleepy Hollow. It’s been six years since she chose to live with her father in Miami instead of her eccentric mother. And now her mother is dead.
This town will suck you in and not let go.
Sleepy Hollow may be famous for its fabled headless horseman, but the town is real. So are its prejudices and hatred, targeting Mica’s family as outsiders. But ghostly voices carry on the wind, whispering that her mother’s death was based on hate…not an accident at all. With thehelp of two very different guys—who pull at her heart in very different ways—Micaela must awaken the hidden secret of Sleepy Hollow…before she meets her mother’s fate.

first of all – i LOVE historical fiction. second – i LOVE the legend of sleepy hollow. (and totally irrelevant to anything i just so happened to attend washington irving middle school as a kid.)
i had pretty high expectations for this book given my aforementioned loves. and i was not disappointed at all! due to my own inability to manage my time very well i literally had a day to read this book to get this review out – i’m fairly certain that even without the deadline i would have finished this book just as quickly.
all of the pieces were there. there is mystery, deception, a love story, history, and a bit of coming-of-age that wove together a very thoughtful cast of characters. gaby masterfully articulates the nuances and mannerisms of each of the major players. her protagonist, mica, is a girl we’ve all known in some ways. i was invested in mica’s story and her story didn’t leave me feeling short-changed or frustrated or lacking closure.
i give this one 5/5. loved it. hope it is book 1 in a series bc i want to read more!
